ISOP’s Third Winter School at Brunel: Exploring Energy Cultures

Brunel University of London hosted ISOP’s third Winter School, “Energy Cultures”, on 14–16 September 2026, bringing together doctoral candidates, supervisors and academic and industrial partners for three days of research exchange and professional development.

The programme opened with joint presentations by doctoral candidates from Work Packages 1–4, connecting their individual research projects with ISOP’s wider objectives in supercritical CO₂ power systems.

The training programme combined academic and industrial perspectives on the energy transition, including sustainable technologies, electricity networks, decarbonisation and the commercialisation of innovation. Visits to Brunel’s advanced solidification facilities at BCAST and its sCO₂ experimental facilities at CSEF provided a closer look at research infrastructure and industrial applications.

Research communication and entrepreneurship were also central themes, with sessions on business proposals, social acceptance of energy technologies and strategic thinking for researchers. Group activities supported by Brunel’s Digital Media Team focused on developing scripts and recording videos to communicate the aims and achievements of each Work Package.

Alongside the training activities, the ISOP Supervisory Board meeting provided a forum to review project progress and discuss the next steps.
